As part of the cooperation agreement between the University of Ljubljana and Center Rog, the Chair of Textile and Fashion Design, the Department of Textiles, Graphic Arts and Design, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, have extended its creative activities into the Center Rog workshops. It was agreed that second-year students would create a series of colourful scarves using the new Kniterate knitting machine. In their concepts for the study project entitled In Homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini, the students recognised scarves as a symbol of the director’s favourite sport, football. Working within the unusual, elongated format of the image field, they expressed their feelings about Pasolini’s exceptional artistic oeuvre. From a multitude of drawings, inspired mainly by film but also by his poetry, they developed two-colour motifs and ornaments. They used various approaches – from classic analogue drawing with pencil, ink or collage to digital creation using graphics tablets and design programmes – which enabled a rich variety of artistic expressions and interpretations.
The scarves were produced on the Kniterate knitting machine using the jacquard technique, where it was necessary to carefully adapt the pattern templates to the technical limitations of the machine. Before starting work, the students attended a training course in which they learned the basics of programming jacquard knitted patterns for the Kniterate knitting machine. Particular attention was paid to the choice of yarn, colour contrasts and knitting density, as these elements significantly affect the legibility of the motifs. The final products are therefore the result of an interplay between digital design, technical knowledge and thoughtful judgement throughout the production process.
Information days exhibition
The scarves were first presented as part of the internal semester exhibition for Information days UNI LJ, in February 2026, in the exhibition space on the sixth floor of the Department of Textiles, Graphic Arts and Design at Snežniška ulica 5 in Ljubljana.
A tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini exhibition
The series of scarves was also one of the many installations at the exhibition In Homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini in Idrija.
