Metropolis appeals to the citizens. Vurnik’s patterns in urban communication

On Thursday, 1st of June 2023, at 7 p.m. at Šivčeva hiša gallery (1st space) in Radovljica, Linhartov trg 22.

The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor of the Municipality of Radovljica, Ciril Globočnik and the President of the Radovljica Local Community, Andrej Golčman.

The opening program will be enriched by Martin Dijak, the student of  the Radovljica School of Music, on accordion (with teacher Gašper Primožič).

The exhibition is in the Šivčeva hiša gallery in Radovljica, Linhartov trg 22. It will be open from June 1 to 30, 2023, from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Architect Vurnik was also a dedicated educator, which is why the local community of Radovljica invites students from various faculties to co-create Vurnik’s days every year, who gain new perspectives on the work of Ivan and Helena Vurnik and through the process of re-creation learn about the meanings of Slovenian architectural heritage.

The exhibition Metropolis appeals to the citizens. Vurnik’s patterns in urban communication was created in collaboration with students and mentors of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana, the Faculty of Design, and the Center for Architecture of Slovenia and Robotina, d. o. o. .On this occasion, a video projection of textile patterns created according to the tradition of the Vurnik couple was prepared on the Vurnik square in the new part of Radovljica, and in this playful way they connected it with cultural heritage.

With the canopy, the young creators wanted to emphasize the characteristics of the main Linhart square in the old town of Radovljica and bring Vurnik’s elements into it. The spatial arrangement of the intervention suggests a connection between the Šivčeva House as the central building of the exhibition and the Town Palace as the main venue of the event, while at the same time providing pleasant shade for the users of the square. We hope that the vibrant canopy triptych will become a recognizable sign of the annual Vurnik Days in Radovljica. The canopy is accompanied by a duet of colourful interactive flags with a QR code incorporated right into the textile pattern.

Urban environment aims to improve the quality of life in cities by making them more efficient, responsive, dynamic, sustainable, and user-friendly, which also includes interactive public art installations where we use QR codes, actuators, and other technologies to create more interesting and convincing experience.
