Materials performs pedagogical work and provides courses for the following study programmes: undergraduate university programme of Materials and Metallurgy, higher professional programme in Metallurgical Technology, postgraduate programme in Metallurgy and Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Study of Materials. In addition to this, we offer services to other faculties of the University of Ljubljana and the University of Maribor, with whom we have a cooperation agreement and act as mentors in postgraduate study programmes.

Our main focus is providing courses on: materials analyses, physical metallurgy of metallic materials, powder metallurgy, composites, material joining and engineering materials and heat treatments. For postgraduate studies, we provide the following courses: Materials science, Material synthesis and Mechanical metallurgy.

Our basic research activities are studies on high-temperature reactions between metals and different atmospheres, micromechanics of materials, fast solidification of metallic liquids, phase transformations and thermo-mechanical treatment.

We also collaborate with companies in R&D research in the areas of: metallurgical, metallic processing, mechanical and power-plant industry, especially in the fields of material selection, production technologies, heat treatment, thermo-mechanical treatment, material joining, powder metallurgy, failure analysis, development of new materials, etc.

The Chair of Engineering Materials has several laboratories: a laboratory for electronic microanalysis equipped with an apparatus for scanning electron microscopy (Jeol 5610) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Laboratory for thermo analysis, Laboratory for mechanical testing, Laboratory for heat treatment and Laboratory for material synthesis, where we have developed our own equipment for fast solidification of metals and a device for coating and sputtering.
