Increased prices of fossil fuels and the demand of the European Union for Slovenia to fulfil the quota of 20% energy production from renewable or alternative sources make geothermal energy a relevant energy source for Slovenia. Unfortunately, the earth heat flow in Slovenia is only close to the world average. Availability of geothermal energy in Slovenia is relatively limited; its development and utilisation are therefore more demanding and economically sensitive. Only modest development has been made in recent decades in Slovenia due to the lack of professionals and practical knowledge. Thus, the objective of this course is to educate professionals to bridge this gap. Students will acquire knowledge on the formation and activities of natural geothermal systems, ways of utilising geothermal energy, assessment of economic potentials and on possibilities of temporary storage of energy in geothermal systems. The purpose of the course is to prepare students for practical work in research and development of natural and artificial engineering of geothermal systems in Slovenia and abroad.
