Engineering materials

Goals: acquiring knowledge about basic groups of engineering materials, particularly metals and their applications. Students are able to classify materials according to their chemical composition, purpose of use, criteria for the selection in a particular application, compatibility of materials, substitution and standardisation. Use of engineering materials in major industrial branches; development trends and possible substitutions. Examples of synthesis and harmonisation of materials; ecological aspects of materials. Topics include: carbon steels and low-alloyed steels, materials for tools, temperature and heat-resistant alloys, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals and alloys, materials used in electro technology, casting alloys, composites, engineering and functional ceramics and organic materials.
