Foundations of mechanics

Goals: Acquisition of fundamental knowledge necessary for the study of reasons and conditions of motion of solid bodies and fluids. The course is divided into three chapters: Statics of rigid bodies, statics of deformable bodies and fluid mechanics. The first chapter provides the fundamentals on rigid body statics: composition and decomposition of forces, reaction forces in supports, moment of force, force equilibrium, centre of gravity and statics of structural elements. In the second chapter, the already known fundamentals of rigid body mechanics are complemented by statics of deformable bodies, providing definitions of stress and strain, elastic constitutive relation and design laws. The third chapter presents the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, focusing on statics and dynamics of liquids and gases.
