Students will get acquainted with the principles in selecting suitable materials for making components and assemblies for various applications in chemical engineering and other engineering branches. Principles of selection will be substantiated with suitable (physical, chemical, mechanical, etc.) properties of materials, with given ‘intrinsic’ and microstructure- dependent and processing-dependent properties. Student will acquire adequate knowledge and understanding of why and how processing influences the properties and microstructure of materials. Further, limitations of using values from handbooks will be given. As a special case, stability of materials in corrosive media will be treated, where chemical and mechanical properties substantially and frequently change with time. Selection of materials is also based on other parameters such as: economics, suitability for recycling and disposal after use.
