  • matter (geology, mining),
  • organic and inorganic materials (textile, graphic, metallic, non-metallic, composite materials),
  • production and processing technologies (textile and graphic technologies, geo-technology, metallurgy),
  • information technologies,

Researchers operate within thirteen research groups. Their research work includes basic, applied and development researches financed by public funds of the Republic of Slovenia, European Union, other international sources and market funds. NTF conducts seven research programmes funded by the Slovenian Research Agency. Among these, five research programmes are led by NTF. In two research programs, NTF acts as a partner.

NTF also comprises an Infrastructure research centre RIC UL-NTF funded by the Slovenian Research Agency, which is included in the Network of the infrastructure research centers of the University of Ljubljana (UL MRIC). RIC UL-NTF includes all the large equipment of the faculty, and offers expert and instrumental support to the research.
