Fundamentals of engineering

Goal: Students acquire fundamental knowledge necessary for communication with other engineering professions. The topics of the course cover: basic knowledge about technical documentation, basic machine elements, with emphasis on drives and structural devices (machines) for the production of materials, dimensioning basic machine elements with emphasis on the elements important for the quality and stability of the production of materials, basic knowledge about loads acting on driving elements of machines and other machine components, basic characteristics and allowable loads of power plant components, development of the ability for defining critical places for the occurrence of damage and fracture of machine parts and devices, maintenance and safety aspects with respect to operating time and overloads, use of materials for particular machine elements and their mechanical properties at low, room and high temperatures and the possibilities of improving the operation of machines by developing materials with better mechanical properties, acquisition of knowledge for calculating allowable stresses with respect to material, machine parts and operation. The students also acquire basic knowledge about the impact of machines and devices on humans and the environment and measures for reducing unwanted effects.
