The recipient of the Faculty Prešeren Award for research in the field of textiles Nina Čuk, together with her mentor from the Chair of Textile and Clothing Engineering doc. dr. Marija Gorjanc and her co-mentor from the National Institute of Chemistry dr. Martin Šala published an original scientific article in the journal Cellulose (A ”, IF = 4.210) entitled: Development of antibacterial and UV protective cotton fabrics using plant food waste and alien invasive plant extracts as reducing agents for the in-situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles.
The results of this research show that the use of plant waste material (inedible food processing by-products and invasive alien plants) for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles directly on the fabric allows low-cost and sustainable production of lightweight, thermally insulating, UV-protective and antibacterial cellulosic textiles.
