BAYER Grants4Ag: Enabling technologies for plant transformation

  • 🌱 Worldwide demand for food, feed, and fuel is on the rise and will continue to increase significantly over the next several decades. The population is expected to reach almost ten billion people by 2030 and securing sufficient supply of quality food in an efficient and responsible way is critical. Bayer Crop Science is committed to ensure access to healthy, diverse, and safe food for a growing global population. Plant transformation is a key step in introducing novel traits that can improve our ability to provide sustainable food sources, particularly in row crops. Introducing new traits and gene-editing technology adds complexity to the transformation system and requires extensive research and innovation. We are looking to collaborate and support innovative scientists that can help us feed a growing planet.
  • 💡 The intent of this project is to enable research towards developing new plant transformation technologies for row crops, particularly monocots. Solutions of interest include: Novel ways to enhance starting material for plant transformation. Novel delivery systems into plant cells. Selection systems. Innovative ways to enhance regeneration into plants with heritable traits (e.g. morphogenic regulators). New methods to enhance crop transformation.

PEPSICO Materials and technologies for greenhouse gas reduction in packaging

  • 📦 PepsiCo has set out to achieve 100% RCBR (recyclable, compostable, biodegradable or reusable) compliance in packaging by 2025 and a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. Many of our packaging types are already considered recyclable (e.g., PET bottles, aluminum cans, glass packaging). But to reach our goals we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the course of the packaging’s entire lifecycle.
  • 💡 We are seeking technologies that will reduce GHG emissions during packaging production or over the entire lifecycle of PET bottles, aluminum cans, and glass packaging (and other types of packaging) without sacrificing packaging quality. Solutions of interest include: Highly functional materials, additives, or coatings that improve packaging properties (e.g., barrier, mechanical properties) and therefore can enable light weighting. Additives or coatings that reduce energy usage during packaging production resulting in lower GHG emissions. Packaging production processes with reduced energy usage.

HALO SCIENCE Technology to remove chemicals, odors, VOCs and pathogens in air

  • 😖 Normal HEPA filters are great for removing particles but don’t remove or destroy chemicals or odors that are in vapor phase. Today the best most common technology to use to remove these chemicals and odors in air involves using activated carbon, which often don’t last the life of the filter and/or lose effectiveness in a few weeks. We are interested in novel technologies that can remove these odors, chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air. It would also be advantageous if the technology eliminates or inactivates bacteria, virus, molds and other pathogens.
  • 💡 We are seeking technologies that remove, destroy, or eliminate chemicals and odors in air. A second priority would be also to eliminate, destroy or inactivate pathogens in the air. Solutions of interest include: Add-on component or device that moves air and contains filtration media, materials, or filter coating/treatment. Module (e.g. plasma, UVC, catalyst) within the device.
