Dear Colleagues, Dear Fellow Presidents of The Guild,

I am sending you an advance copy of one paper which we will discuss at the General Assembly, which is how to develop our collaboration with ARUA universities in practice, following a clear accord at the last General Assembly that we should take advantage of the strategic opportunities afforded by the unique ARUA-Guild partnership. As you know, I convened a special Presidents’ meeting on 29 April, and the GA paper which I am sending you – and which will discuss further in June – presents the outcomes of that meeting.

I am sending you this paper in advance because time is of the essence. There is one particular deadline that will be of interest to those institutions wishing to develop doctoral collaboration with ARUA (and other) partners. The next funding deadline for the creation of MSCA Doctoral networks is 15 November 2022. If colleagues from our member universities wish to take advantage of this opportunity to develop funded doctoral collaboration, then time is of the essence.

I am therefore contacting you to propose that if you wish to identify a researcher (or researchers) who wish(es) to apply for an MSCA Doctoral network, you may contact laura.royer@the-guild.eu <mailto:laura.royer@the-guild.eu>  by 20 June 2022. Of course, leading on the project will continue to be the responsibility of your colleagues in your institutions. But we would like to see if the Guld and ARUA might provide a supportive context to your bid, either through general reference to our work and track-record of collaboration, or by also trying to identify further partners from across The Guild and ARUA networks if these are still required. (You will find an overview of future funding opportunities listed in the attached paper).

If you have identified interest in your university to apply for an MSCA Doctoral network involving African/ARUA partners, please let Laura know:

*             Name and contact of the lead researcher

*             Name and contact of the lead research application support

*             Area of collaboration.

*             If applicable, name of existing partners expected to join the project

*             Alternatively, number of African and European partners still required, where The Guild and ARUA could support the identification of partners

Note that based on the policy orientations of the EU and the AU, areas of particular strategic interest for the EU include:

*             Green transition (including Food and Nutrition Security; Sustainable Agriculture;

*             Climate Change; Sustainable Energy; Ocean Research)

*             Innovation and technology

*             Public health

*             Capacities for science and higher education

Naturally, this list should not prevent universities from developing projects in other areas (including Social Sciences and Humanities).

This does not prejudice the discussion we will have at the General Assembly in a month’s time. But if the General Assembly decides at that point that The Guild and ARUA can and should provide a supportive context for such bids, we can then spring to action on this call for collaborative Doctoral Networks without delay – noting that the creation of doctoral schools has been at the core of Guild-ARUA demands for a number of years.

I look forward to discussing this further with you at the General Assembly on 7-8 June!
